Intestinal Obstruction


Abstract
A statistical study was made of 247 cases of intestinal obstruction which were operated during last 7 years, from January, 1958 to December. 1961.
Approximately three-fourth of cases were due to postoperative adhesion (36, 8 %), Intussusception (21.1%), and Hernia (16,6%), The neoplastic stricture of the bowel were less frequent causes.
Intestinal obstruction was found more frequently in men(70, 4%) than in women (20.6%) and mortality ratio of male to female was 5.2 : 1.
The age range in majority of the patients was two to three decade of life(36.0%).
A majority of them (46,1%) were seen_ during late spring and summer.
The cardinal symptoms and signs were abdominal pain (79.4%), vomiting (62,8 %) and abdominal distension (59.1%).
The release of obstruction was the most common operative procedure (36.8%) and primary intestinal resection was employed in 44 cases (17.8%),
The operations performed within 24 hours from onset (36.4%) resulted mortality rate of 5,6% and the highest mortality (24, 4%) was seen in the group of 4?5 days duration.
The surgical mortality rate in this series was 12.6% (31 cases).
